Six more major companies have joined the federal government’s ‘Clean Fleet’ program which seeks to make eighteen wheelers more fuel efficient. The Clean Fleet program is part of the larger plan by the Obama administration to cut U.S. dependence on foreign oil to two-thirds of its current rate by 2025.
You may remember our earlier report on green transportation developments from February where we first discussed a new design for eighteen wheelers. We recommend anyone interested read the entire post. However, to briefly recap a new design discovered at a Department of Energy factory increased the aerodynamics of the large trucks allowing them to get 7-12% more mileage out of their gasoline.
In April, these new design developments, along with broader ideas, from the Department of Energy became part of the Obama Energy plan. Since then a few major companies have come on board. These include PepsiCo, AT&T, FedEx, UPS, and Verizon. However, it is the recent addition of these six major companies that are really making the program look to be a success.
The companies that are part of this new wave, according to SmartPlanet, are:
Coca-Cola: Owner of the largest hybrid fleet in North America.
Enterprise Holdings: Pioneer of electric vehicle rentals.
General Electric: The company is planning to convert at least half of its global vehicles; with a deployment of 25,000 electric vehicles planned by 2015.
OSRAM Sylvania: The lighting giant is aiming to replace 10 percent to 12 percent of its fleet annually with more energy-efficient technologies.
Ryder: Just opened a natural gas vehicle maintenance facility to support hundreds of heavy-duty trucks.
Staples: Has already improved fuel economy by more than 20 percent since 2007; testing electric delivery trucks in Ohio and California.”
With these major partners we are making major steps forward in reducing foreign dependence on oil and even more importantly being more responsible consumers and citizens by reducing GHG emissions from commercial vehicle use.
