Veterans To Receive Green Job Training From San Bernardino County

by Green Jobs Ready on November 17, 2010

Joe Nelson, a staff writer for the Redlands Daily Facts newspaper, reported today, November 17, that San Bernardino County will be offering military veterans a unique opportunity to “receive job training in the solar and wind energy fields under a new program approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors.”

The green job training for these veterans is being conducted under a contract between the Kern County Employment Training Resource Department and the San Bernardino County Workforce Development Department, which will undertake the dual task of performing combined outreach and marketing efforts and will also offer case management services and job training to the county’s veterans until the end of June 2012, at of cost of what Nelson quotes as $643,500.

Jeanette Hill, a program analyst for the San Bernardino County’s Workforce Development Department, articulated to Nelson that the main focus was on assisting veterans in finding a steady source of income to maintain a healthy and satisfying lifestyle in this country’s current difficult economic state.

“We’re focusing on people returning from the war with no job opportunities,” Hill is quoted as saying in the Redlands Daily Facts article. “Right now with the job market, it’s pretty difficult for them to enter the work force.”

According to statistics provided in the article, Kern County, California, is a hotbed of alternative energy technologies that consistently provides more steady green jobs to nearby communities as these green industries increase in size and variety. Many solar, wind, and even geothermal projects have been planned henceforth for numerous areas of Kern County, and thus Hill is paraphrased in the article as saying that the clean energy fields seemed the most ideal to tap into for veterans seeking employment.

Besides offering green jobs training in some of the most recognized facets of the green jobs market, such as wind power, solar power, and other alternative energy technologies and strategies rapidly gaining popularity, veterans that partake in the green jobs training sponsored by San Bernardino County will also have the option of training in home weatherization retrofits, building performance analysis, how to be a weatherization technician, and how to install and maintain wind turbines.
