The BlueGreen Alliance, a leading partnership of environmental organizations and labor unions, has embarked on a national 30-city clean power bus tour to urge the U.S. Senate to support legislation aimed at saving and creating green energy jobs and growing the renewable energy economy.
The event, titled The Job’s Not Done Tour, kicked off in Los Angeles on August 16. Since beginning its 3-week 17-state tour, the clean energy bus has traveled to numerous cities, including: Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Denver, Little Rock, Kansas City, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Dayton, Detroit and Chicago.
Each of the stops includes press conferences, roundtable discussions and other events designed to promote key aspects of the clean energy economy including green manufacturing, a wider-reaching broadband network, “smart-grid” transmission systems, and commercial and residential building efficiency. These events are hosted and co-sponsored by area chapters of leading environmental groups, like the Sierra Club, and labor unions, such as the Service Employees International Union.
Upcoming stops and clean energy technology events are set for Cleveland on Aug. 27, Pittsburgh on Aug. 30, and Boston on September 1. The Job’s Not Done Tour is scheduled to end on September 3 in Richmond, Virginia.
Launched in 2006, the BlueGreen Alliance is a partnership of environmental advocacy groups and labor unions that are dedicated to expanding the number and quality of jobs in the clean energy economy. The group, founded by the United Steelworkers and the Sierra Club, includes a diverse range of organizations, including: Laborers’ International Union of North America, Natural Resources Defense Council, American Federation of Teachers, Communications Workers of America, Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association, Amalgamated Transit Union and the Utility Workers Union of America.
The President of the Communications Workers of America, Larry Cohen, emphasized the need to take action now to develop broadband networks and other technologies for the benefit of the clean energy economy.
“By failing to take action on these important clean energy policies we are missing a huge opportunity to create good jobs now. Currently we are 16th in the world in the percentage of citizens with access to broadband. Expansion will not only create jobs, save Americans money and make our country more efficient, it will lead to the sustainable communities that are such an important part of our future,” stated Cohen in an press release issued by the BlueGreen Alliance on Aug. 16.
D. Michael Langford, National President of the Utility Workers Union of America, also voice his support of adopting renewable energy technology.
“We can re-energize our economy by re-energizing America. Building a smart grid that transmits cleaner, renewable energy will create good jobs, and we need to take action to make those jobs a reality now,” said Langford.
