When it comes to individuals who have played an important role throughout history in the case of environmental education, we often look at the number of speeches given or the number of books published.  Yes this is a great sign that an individual was a pioneer in environmental education and environmental ethics, but sometimes no words need to be spoken to make an impact.  If there were ever and individual to showcase that it would be Ansel Adams.

Ansel Adams was born on February 20th 1902 in California.  His family was well-known and upper-class members of the community.  Ansel Adams, like many environmental ethics pioneers, was taken by the environment, nature, and the wilderness at an early age.  Part of this was due to the fact that he was prone to sickness and wasn’t interested in enjoying sports or games like many other children.

One fact that you might find interesting about Ansel Adams is that his grandfather started a profitable lumber business.  Adams’sfather would later go onto run this business.  This business was rather successful until the Panic of 1907.  However, he would later condemn this method of making a living because of the loss of the much needed redwood trees.

Ansel Adams is most well-known for his black and white pictures of the Western wilderness.  It was after a family trip to the YosemiteNational Park in 1916 when he would essentially develop his love and passion for photography.  According to Wikipedia, it was on this trip when his father presented him with a Kodak Brownie box camera, his first of many.  Not long after this trip, he returned back to Yosemite National Park with better camera equipment.

Over the years, Adams began perfecting his photography skills (with both picture taking and developing).  When he was only seventeen years old, he joined the Sierra Club, which is similar to an environmental education group that had the goal of preserving and protecting the natural wonders of the earth.  He was a board member for over 30 years and even served as a program director.

Despite the fact that Ansel Adams went on to take many more photographs of the Western wilderness, his most well-known works are from his pictures of the Yosemite National Park.  These photographs are often considered treasures because they showcase the beauty of not only Yosemite but other areas before they became popular tourist attractions.
